1941 Signed MB Marcel BOUCHER Huge 4 Swallow BIRD Pin Vtg Brooch Brunialti Book. In gold-tone metal with pavé-set clear stones, this huge signed MB Marcel Boucher bird brooch beautifully captures the majesty of a bird in flight. Detailed and dimensional, with outstretched wings and fanning feathers, this magnificent bird has flowing lines that effectively suggest fluttering, graceful motion. Marcel Boucher was from France and worked for Cartier before he founded his own firm in America in 1937, manufacturing costume jewelry until 1971.

This bird design from 1941 was the first in the line of jewelry created for Saks Fifth Avenue by his fledgling American firm, a collection of exotic, dimensional bird brooches that brought him tremendous success and critical acclaim. It was awarded patent number 129,842 on October 7, 1941. Of course it is a book piece, appearing on pages 199 and 200 of. American Costume Jewelry 1935 - 1950. There is some wear to the gold-tone finish in the middle of the wing in the forefront, mostly confined to the two top feathers (and continuing over the top edge to the silvery back of the wing in that area) as shown in the photos. This type of finish wear is typical of pieces in this series and apart from that and darkening/dimming of the clear rhinestones, it is in Very Good vintage condition with just expected surface dirt and scratches. Despite the flaws, it is quite Spectacular. Measuring about 4" tall by just under 4-1/4" wide by about 1/2 deep, this dimensional brooch is large and impressive with great presence. It is also graceful and expressive due to the openwork and curving lines.

It is signed on the back of a feather near the pin's hinge with the early MB mark, "MB" and the Phrygian helmet that is a symbol of France (and looks like a bird to some). On the other side of the hinge is a letter (that, according to the Brunialti's, is an "M").

On the back of the adjacent feather below, is Des. This brooch is made with the careful attention to design and workmanship for which Boucher is known. Widely considered the greatest of the American costume jewelry makers, Boucher's training combined with his creative designs resulted in pieces that are among the most sought after by collectors - particularly the birds.
