Antique Sterling Colored Paste Enamel BIRD on Branch Pin BIG Pheasant Brooch >3. Set in sterling with multi-colored paste stones and enamel accents, this antique brooch depicting a big bird (I think is a pheasant) perched on a branch is SO appealing. He is dimensional and highly detailed, from his yellow enamel beak and green guilloche enamel branch to the lines incised in his legs and especially, the colorways of the stones. The artist captured the grace and beauty of a bird on a branch most effectively. Mr Bird has an alert stance: head tilted slightly, one leg high up on the branch, and conveys so much dramatic tension, you are almost surprised when he doesn't move. He has a rather superior air, as if he knows quite well how beautiful he is. The groupings of stone colors effectively suggest the shimmer of his feathers and they are yellow at the tips of the tail, then orange, then fuchsia pink, then orange again, and yellow as they climb his back. His chest is red and is topped by two curving rows of orange, one pink and one yellow. There is a little openwork between the arching tail feathers and the rows of stones are all framed by sterling that is beaded for added texture, interest and definition. His head is a mix of pink, red, yellow and clear stones, surmounted by a yellow crest. Adjacent to the enamel beak, is a red stone with a pink one angled below. This, combined with the tilt of his head gives him a properly watchful avian personality. Clearly ruling the roost, he must be a male because his plumage is so fabulous! This is a Big Bird, measuring about 3-3/16" long, from the tip of his beak to the tip of his tail feathers, by 1-5/8" tall by over 1/4 deep. He weighs 16.5 grams.

While large and impressive, with great presence, he is also graceful and expressive, due to the flowing, almost swooping, lines, all the colors and detailing. Despite its age, the brooch is in Very Good vintage condition. The stones are all present and all appear to be original as is the enamel, which is completely intact. There is just expected surface dirt and dimming / darkening of some of the stones, which for most, will only add to its antique charm.

Overall condition is very nice and this Bird is a Beauty! It is signed "Sterling" along with the number "399" on the back. This bird will be a super addition to a collection and is easy to wear as well. But it is not just for bird lovers; this one is for all your fine feathered friends and will fly out of here in a gift box. This charming and large example will be an exquisite addition to your collection!
