Vintage 1950's Australian Lega Sterling Silver Marcasite'Bird of Paradise' Brooch. A beautiful marcasite'bird of paradise' brooch from the mid 20th century! The brooch is made of sterling silver and features bright marcasite accents encrusted throughout the bird design. The birds have a 3-dimensional appearance and the attention to detail is evident - flowing tail feathers, eyes, beak and leaves give the piece a real-life look.
Each bird is perched up on a branch and cocked in opposite directions. There is milgrain detail adding further flair, and a subtle level of patina remains on the silver surface, displaying further depth of character. To the reverse is a pin and roller-style catch, albeit the inner'roller' component to the catch is missing, however the pin still fastens securely and retains good tension, as well a safety chain/pin connection gives extra security. Stamped to the back of the piece is "Lega" and "No 514". The bird brooch design (No 514) can be seen in the book'Australian Jewellers Gold & Silversmiths Makers & Marks' by K Cavill, G Cocks and J Grace, page 154. A wonderfully charming vintage brooch, perfect for the avid bird lover.. The overall condition of the brooch is very good. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent stones missing or damage to the stones. Amid the'roller' component missing to the roller catch, the pin fastens securely and retains good tension. A slight darkened patina remains to the silver surface, adding a nice contrast.
