Antique Sterling Silver Enamel Butterfly Brooch Hallmark 1917 Adie & Lovekin Birmingham in Gift Presentation Box. Beautiful Delicate Antique Sterling Silver and Enamel Butterfly Brooch - with good UK Hallmark for Birmingham Assay Office and date letter for 1917 with the makers mark ALLd for Adie & Lovekin who were important designers makers of unique and beautiful silver designs in the late Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau styles (for more about the maker see below) - this is a gorgeous little bar brooch with hinged pin with an irridescent enamel butterfly with green and blue tints to the wings and a yellow body with silver antennae all set on a silver bar - there is a little wear to the enamel through which you can see some of the silver base, as you would expect from a piece of this age, which has survived over 100 years - it comes with a lovely gift presentation box - an ideal gift or a treat for you!

Adie & Lovekin - The firm began its business as Adie & Lovekin and was active in Snape Street, Hockley, Birmingham (before 1872). The firm became Adie & Lovekin Ltd in 1889.The company manufactured a wide range of unique and exclusive silver fancy goods at the end of the 19th century and had a factory in Regent Street, Hockley, Birmingham. In 1894 they commissioned Mansell & Mansell to design a new factory at 23, Frederick Street, Birmingham which became known as'Trafalgar Works'. They were important silver smiths in the late Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau designs. The firm entered various hallmarks at Birmingham Assay Office (1879, 1902, 1906) and Chester Assay Office (1883, 1909).
The Chester 1913 hallmark was entered by Alfred Lovekin, Frederick Simmons and George Deeby (Alfred Lovekin was the director). Adie & Lovekin Ltd were leading Birmingham producers of sewing items, scissors, button hooks, pin cushions, babies rattles, bookmarks, nurses buckles and other novelty silver items; their speciality being animal shaped pin cushions in the form of pigs, swans, elephants and even camels. The company ceased trading in the 1920s.
