Victorian Gold Platinum Diamond Sapphire Nesting Swallow Brooch In Period Box

  
Read the condition section below the description where I point out any defects with every item I list. I'm human, so I may miss something. This is why photos are a part of the description. The swallow tested between 14 and 18 KT. He or she carries a nest with its feet. The wings are topped with platinum and set with six diamonds. Five of the diamonds are old mine cut, one is an early brilliant cut replacement. He has a faceted sapphire eye. The diamonds range in approximate size from 1mm to 2mm, and one is an oblong almost baguette shape. The bird measures approximately 1" and 3/8" tall by 1" and 7/8" wide. There is a hallmark, unidentified, on the pin stem hinge (see photos). The pin stem locks into a trombone push/pull clasp. Please use caution when wearing if you are unfamiliar with how these clasps work. This was how many antique pre-1900s brooches were broken. The nest is hand woven and finished beautifully. In fact everything about this swallow required master goldsmithing skills.

This lovely heirloom will come with the period Victorian jewelry box in the photos, although it is not the original box. You will not be disappointed!

Condition: Stunning condition, given his age. He dates to the late 1800s. There is a minor ding or light scuff on the front, if I can even call it that, but it is evident on magnification.

Any other dents or dings that appear on the photos are produced by light and shadows from my high intensity lamps. The pin stem is slightly curved from incorrect use of the trombone clasp (as mentioned above). The one brilliant cut diamond is a replacement, which was performed some time in the 1950s. Other than light surface scratches, there are no other damages I can visualize.

The box has discoloring, thead loss to the velvet, etc. It is far from perfect but it seems to fit the bird perfectly. Provenance: This is a family heirloom, and has been under their watchful eyes for four generations. The maternal line was Danish, and although I do not have a way to confirm it, this may be how the bird made its transatlantic flight!
