The pin has fantastic Art Deco lines and is highly detailed. It is so sculptural, it almost looks as if it were carved. Incised lines and the suggestion of layering add to the texture, depth and contrast. The juxtaposition and repetition of geometric shapes and straight and curving lines create a sense of animated movement: the way the rows of scalloped and straight lines in his wings and tail feathers radiate out from his body almost make him seem to. And the rows of short lines incised in his breast and those leading to his tail perfectly suggest wispy, downy feathers as well. The watchful avian personality of the bird is clearly communicated by his incised and oxidized (deliberately darkened), hooded beady eye and upturned head. The brooch measures about 1-3/4" wide (wing span) by about 1-1/8" tall and weighs 10.9 grams. It is signed on the back with the number "320" below "925S Denmark" and "Georg Jensen" in the dotted oval. A photo of this brooch (with matching earrings) may be seen in Janet Drucker's. Georg Jensen, A Tradition of Splendid Silver. Master Bird could use a good bird bath and there are scratches (including one, below the incised lines on his breast, that can be seen with the naked eye that may be noted in some of the photos), apart from which, the brooch is in Very Good vintage condition with dirt and the even, dark tarnish that can come only with time, giving it a lovely vintage patina. With the excellence of design and execution that characterizes the best Scandinavian silver, this versatile piece will go with everything, night or day from work to play and is likely to lift the spirits of all who see it. Georg Jensen silver never goes out of style or down in value and belongs equally in collections of Arts and Crafts, Mid-Century Modern Design, Scandinavian Silver and Jewelry. This Bird pin by Arno Malinowski is an outstanding example. Of course, this interesting and whimsical brooch would make a terrific gift, however I doubt you will want to part with it, and will fly out of here in a gift box, just in case. By THE most highly regarded name in Scandinavian jewelry, this bird will make a lofty addition to your collection and your wardrobe!
