Vintage c1950 Sterling Silver and Marcasite'Avis' Name Brooch. VINTAGE MID CENTURY STERLING SILVER LEGA MARCASITE BIRD BROOCH.
A beautiful Lega marcasite bird brooch from the mid 20th century, c1950! Made of sterling silver, this stunning brooch depicts two exotic Bird of Paradise birds which are decorated with bright marcasite stones.
Each bird is perched up on a branch and cocked in opposite directions with a lovely 3-dimensional appearance. The birds have all the charming attributes including flowing tail feathers, eyes, beaks and leaves giving a real-life look. Milgrain edging adds further detail. A darkened natural patina remains on the silver surface, adding depth of character. To the reverse is a pin and roller-style catch, as well, a security chain/pin connection. The piece tests sterling silver. Signed "Lega" and "No 514" to the back of the brooch. Lega was an Australian, Melbourne based company which produced some of the nicest quality marcasite jewellery from around 1948 and into the 1950's.Lega was one of few firms producing marcasite sterling silver jewellery here in Australia. A delightful vintage brooch, perfect for the avid bird lover.. The overall condition of the brooch is very good. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent stones missing or damage to the stones.The rollover clasp securely fastens. A darkened patina remains to the silver surface, adding a nice contrast (this can be polished out if desired).
