Vintage Zuni Magpie, bird brooch by Lucy Ceshu or Quincy Panteah

  

Then, this is one of the wonderful magpie pieces (I've heard these called magpie, thunderbird or melon head) made by Lucy Ceshu and/or one of her ex husbands, Quincy Panteah or Teluli Tsabetsaye. Lucy Ceshu is usually credited with the magpies unless the figures face to their right (this one faces to it's left) and/or, have the dot inlay "belly button" in which case, the birds are thought to be made by Quincy Panteah. Quincy served as Governor of Zuni from 1982 to 1983 and he and Lucy made some jewelry together. Their marriage dissolved after 1983 and after that, he changed his jewelry birds to face the other way.

He did not usually sign these birds but he added a black jet "belly button" that essentially became his signature. So, this bird has a "belly button" and so, was probably made by Quincy Panteah before 1983. Fine pieced or mosaic work with carefully shaped stones that fit beautifully.

This brooch is 1 7/8" to 2" tall x 1 1/8 wide. A lovely pin with interesting family history. The brooch is in great shape with light wear, natural foibles in some of the inlay pieces. Lucy's second husband was Teluli Tsabetsaye, who made a similar bird but with a distinct mark.
